Farmers growing kale either in their game strips or wild bird covers would have been perturbed to learn of the EU Commission ban on Neonicotinoid seed treatments, which protect the young, emerging kale plants from flea beetle attack.
Previously we had to resort to spraying but timing is critical and many a crop has failed when sprays were missed. It's good news then that kale seed treatments have been excluded from the ban by the EU and treated seed will be available for the 2014 season.
